Virgin's Icy Strait Point Guide: ZipRider or Whale Tour?

Episode 7 closes Virgin's Alaska series with two very different headline excursions and the Huna Tlingit story behind the port.

Choose the kind of big day you want
  • ZipRider: About 1.5 hours, 5,495 feet across six lines, and speeds up to 60 mph. It is not wheelchair accessible.
  • Whales & Wild Feast: About 3.5 hours, starting from $295 in Virgin's October 1 guide, with whale watching and a waterfront crab-and-shrimp boil.
  • Access: The whale outing can accept collapsible wheelchairs when a Sailor can manage a few steps; Virgin says to arrange access 72 hours ahead.
  • Context: Icy Strait Point is owned by the Huna Tlingit community of Hoonah, not an outside cruise-port operator.

Virgin Voyages published the final episode of its seven-part Alaska series on October 1. The guide frames Icy Strait Point around the community that owns it, with onboard heritage guide Herb connecting the shoreline to his family's history and the Huna Tlingit community's move from Glacier Bay to Hoonah.

Virgin says Huna Totem Corporation bought the abandoned cannery in 1996 and rebuilt it as Icy Strait Point. Its guide says every dollar generated goes back into Hoonah and 85% of the staff live in the community. The freshly carved Warrior Totem Poles honor veterans, aunties, and grandmothers and took about five months to make.

For adrenaline, the ZipRider launches from 1,330 feet on White Alice, also called Hoonah Mountain. Virgin lists unlimited gondola rides, a supplied GoPro video, a souvenir shot glass, and a photo among the inclusions. It advises warm waterproof layers and sturdy shoes, and says the experience is not recommended for pregnancy, fear of heights or vertigo, or back or neck injuries.

For wildlife and food, Whales & Wild Feast pairs Point Adolphus whale watching with a crab-and-shrimp boil and fire-pit marshmallows. Virgin's guide says sightings are guaranteed or the excursion is refunded, one beverage is included, and dietary restrictions cannot be accommodated. Treat the quoted $295 starting price, access rules, and inclusions as the October 1 official snapshot; the Sailor App and current Shore Things listing control when you book.
