Quick Answer

Universal Orlando can feel overwhelming for first-timers, but the right strategy makes a huge difference. Start by getting help from a Universal-focused pro, pack light, use lockers only when you actually need them, and think carefully about your hotel strategy — because the right hotel move can save money and unlock major perks for your whole trip.

Why Should Your First Tip Be Getting Help Planning?

Because the right plan can save you stress, save you money, and help you avoid rookie mistakes before you even arrive.

There’s a huge difference between just showing up at Universal and showing up with a real strategy. The right hotel choice, ticket plan, park-day setup, and Express approach can completely change your trip. Working with Fruglar means you get help from people who actually know Universal — not random generic advice from the internet — so you can spend less time stressing over logistics and more time getting excited for the fun part.

What Should You Know About Lockers?

The best locker strategy is to only use the free lockers when a ride actually requires it.

Universal requires lockers on certain attractions, especially rides where loose items like phones, bags, and wands aren’t allowed. The free lockers are great for those moments — but the smartest move is to avoid needing them all day long.

If you keep it light, the whole process gets easier. A small backpack works, but an even better move is a lanyard with your pass, ID, and credit or debit card. That way, when you hit a ride that requires a locker, you’re usually just tossing your phone inside instead of unloading your whole bag every time.

Can You Bring Your Own Snacks?

Yes, small snacks and water bottles are allowed, saving you from pricy concession costs.

While you can't bring in full meals, packing granola bars or fruit can keep you fueled without breaking the bank.

How to Dress for a Day at Universal?

Comfort is key: wear lightweight, breathable clothing and sturdy shoes.

You'll be walking a lot, so opt for sneakers or comfortable sandals. Also, bring a poncho for Florida's sudden showers.

Which Universal Hotel Should You Pick?

Honestly, you really can’t go wrong — every Universal hotel has its own personality and perks.

That’s part of what makes Universal Orlando so fun to plan. Cabana Bay gives you the lazy river, classic retro theming, and some awesome Volcano Bay views. Stella Nova feels totally different, with an out-of-this-world vibe and a psychedelic outer shell that makes it stand out immediately. Helios Grand gives you one of the best park views in all of Orlando if you book the right room. Royal Pacific has that chill island feel, Portofino Bay brings the luxury stay energy, and if you want to lean all the way in, you can absolutely rock out on the Club Level at Hard Rock.

The real insider play, though, is using the hotels strategically. One of the smartest ways to do Universal is to book one of the strong value resorts for most of the trip, then add a split night at a Signature hotel. That can unlock two days of Unlimited Express for your whole party at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, which can be a massive value if you do it right.

Tip Description
Arrive Early Get to the park at least 45 minutes early to be among the first through the gates.
Use the App Download the Universal Orlando app for wait times, mobile food ordering, and day-of updates.
Stay Hydrated Bring a refillable water bottle to use at fountains throughout the park.

What’s the Best Strategy for Hagrid’s?

Honestly, the best strategy for Hagrid’s is to have an Express Pass.

Ever since they created an Express line for Hagrid’s, the standby line has nearly doubled. So if you’re not walking in with Express, your best options are pretty simple: speedwalk your way there as soon as the park opens, wait until the last few hours before park close, or wear comfy shoes and bear it.

If you want help figuring out how to make that happen without overspending, have a look at our Vacay Costimator. It can help you map out strategies that may get you an Express Pass, a luxury hotel night, and even annual passes for way less than you might imagine.

What Should First Timers Know About Epic Universe?

Epic Universe is incredible — but it can absolutely cost you a pretty penny if you don’t plan carefully.

If Epic is part of your first Universal Orlando trip, go in knowing it’s a different beast. Savings can be had with the Annual Pass discount, but not much, so don’t expect a huge bargain there. Express Pass can easily run $150–$350 per person, and unlike the Unlimited Express you can get at some Universal hotels for the other parks, Epic’s Express is one use per ride.

The best strategy I’ve found is to hit Donkey Kong first and save Ministry of Magic for last. Personally, I think Hiccup’s Wing Gliders is the best ride in the park, but in general your day will go a lot better if you keep a close eye on wait times and stay flexible.

A few more things first timers should know: the trees are still young or nonexistent in a lot of areas, so wear sunscreen and a hat. And if you can, stay until dark — the lighting around the park is fantastic and the whole place takes on a completely different feel at night.

If you’re staying nearby, keep an eye on Helios hotel prices and try to snag a park view room if you can. The view is worth it, and being able to walk straight out of the hotel and right into the park is a huge perk.
